Notice of Availability of Environmental Assessment and Finding of
No Significant Impact for a Cooperative USDA-APHIS and WSDA Spongy Moth Eradication Program in Pierce and King counties, Washington state
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is proposing to eradicate a plant pest, spongy moth (SM; Lymantria dispar dispar), infestations of which have been identified in Washington state. Spongy moth eradication actions would take place in the city of Lakewood, Pierce County and the area west of Lake Youngs in King County. The treatment areas comprise 498 acres in Pierce County, and 333 acres in King County. Washington state is at risk from the introduction of invasive pests such as SM due to potential adverse impacts on foreign trade, domestic economy, and regional ecology. APHIS conducted an environmental assessment (EA) and reached a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Spongy Moth Cooperative Response Program in Pierce and King Counties, Washington state. APHIS and WSDA are notifying the public that the EA and FONSI are available for public review on the APHIS website National Environmental Policy Act Documents: Plant Protection and Quarantine – https://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant-pests-diseases/environmental-assessments. For general questions concerning the Spongy Moth Program contact the Spongy Moth National Policy Manager, David Gruchot, david.j.gruchot@usda.gov.
