Public Notice Extent of Groundwater Contamination Eastern Sacramento County Groundwater in a portion of eastern Sacramento County is contaminated. Contaminants include industrial solvents and chemicals involved in rocket and missile manufacturing and testing. For its part in the contamination, Aerojet Rocketdyne, Inc. (“Aerojet”) is required to halt the spread of contamination, remove the contamination, and restore the groundwater so that it is safe to use. Aerojet has installed and is currently operating treatment systems to contain and clean up the contaminated groundwater. Drinking water in this area is primarily provided by public water supply systems which do not extract water from the contaminated groundwater zones. Water quality in water supply systems is monitored by the State Water Resources Control Board-Division of Drinking Water. The map shows the estimated boundary of chemicals in groundwater in the area, including chemicals associated with the Aerojet Superfund Site and others. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency works with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control and the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board to manage the Aerojet Superfund Site cleanup. Any new construction of private or public water supply wells in Sacramento County requires a permit. The Sacramento County Environmental Management Department has a permit application review process for supply wells proposed near known groundwater contamination. For further information about the Aerojet Superfund Site, including a more detailed site map (under “View Site on Map”), please visit: http://www.epa.gov/superfund/aerojet or https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/centralvalley/water_issues/site_cleanup/aerojet/. The Aerojet Community Advisory Group meets six times per year and works with the regulatory agencies to acquaint people with this very complex site. To be added to their email list and informed of meetings, please contact the US Environmental Protection Agency or Regional Water Quality Control Board staff listed below for more information.
