Durham County Notice is hereby given that the Durham County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on August 24, 2026 at a meeting starting at 7 p.m. to consider the adoption of a proposed moratorium on the acceptance and processing of applications for new or expanded data centers, with some exemptions, with Durham County. The purpose of the proposed moratorium is to allow the county to evaluate the impacts of data center facilities on the utility capacity, environmental resources, energy consumption, and local zoning, and to prepare appropriate land-use regulations. The proposed ordinance would temporarily prohibit the construction, development, or permitting of data centers, cryptocurrency mining operations and any use associated with data center processing facilities. Changes to the proposed action may be made following the public hearing. The meeting will be held in person in the Durham County Board of Commissioners Chambers on the 2nd Floor of the Durham County Administration Building, located at 200 E. Main Street, and online using the Zoom virtual meeting platform. All interested persons are invited to attend the public hearing and provide comment.
