NOTICE OF DISCHARGED OF UNTREATED SEWAGE
The Town of Hillsborough experienced a discharge of untreated wastewater from its collection system near 219 Odie Street of approximately 38,400 gallons. The discharge was discovered on July 13, 2026, around 8:30 a.m., after a weekend odor complaint and investigation. Sewage exited a sewer cleanout on Odie Street and traveled down a vegetated ditch into an unnamed tributary well north of the Eno River in the Neuse River Basin. The cause was a lodged construction fence post wrongly present in the sewer system at a downstream manhole on Daye Street. Once the post was removed, the overflow ceased at approximately 9:15 a.m. Crews cleaned the area of debris and inside the sewer mains to verify flow was restored. This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21, Chapter 143.215C. For more information contact Marie Strandwitz, Utilities Director at 919-296-9631.
