The School Board of Miami-Dade County, Florida announces the following Board Policy action will be taken at its meeting on:
FEBRUARY 11, 2026
1:00 P.M.
School Board Auditorium
1450 N.E. Second Avenue
Miami, Florida 33132
To Amend Board Policy 8462, Student Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect, to be brought further in alignment with Ch. 39, F.S., and to incorporate updated District practices and procedures on reporting student abuse, abandonment and neglect, and interacting with the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) during an investigation. A reference to the Human Trafficking Miami Hotline and requirement to report suspected human trafficking in addition to abuse, abandonment and neglect would also be added. Policy 8462, Student Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect, is proposed for amendment to further align the policy's definitions and requirements with Ch. 39, F.S., which governs reports and investigations of child abuse, abandonment, and neglect. The policy would also be amended in response to recommendations made by the Office of the State Attorney, Eleventh Judicial Circuit, to expressly incorporate a requirement to contact the Human Trafficking Miami Hotline (305-349-7867) when human trafficking is suspected in connection with abuse, abandonment, or neglect. The policy would otherwise be amended to remove provisions applicable only to DCF and to clarify the limited extent to which employees can interact with suspected victims of abuse, abandonment, and neglect, receive information from DCF, or become involved in DCF investigations under Chapter 39.
Specific Authority: Fla. Stat. ss. 1001.32(2), 1001.41(1)–(2), 1001.42(8), 1001.43(10)-(11), 1006.061
