The Child Fatality Review Committee of Bibb County, Georgia
Dear Child Fatality Review Unit:
In accordance with O.C.G.A. § 19-15-3(o), the Bibb County Child Fatality Review Committee submits the following information from the 2025 calendar year for your review:
The Bibb County Child Fatality Review Committee, chaired by the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, has representation from the Department of Public Health, the Coroner's Office, Bibb County Sheriff's Office, the Bibb County District Attorney's Office, the Bibb County Department of Family and Children's Services, Bibb County Juvenile Court, Mental Health and Prevention Advocacy, the Child Advocacy Center, Bibb County Public Schools, and Safe Kids. The Committee meets monthly to review child deaths.
During the 2025 calendar year, the Committee was notified of 14 child deaths, all of which qualified for review by the Committee. The reports for these deaths have been properly submitted online. The category breakdown for these deaths is as follows:
Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID) – 3; Homicides – 2; Traffic Accident - 1; Suicide – 1; Drownings – 4; Medical – 2; Co-sleeping – 1.
Our Committee continues to collaborate with other appropriate agencies to educate our community and to raise awareness for safe sleeping; fire safety and prevention; car safety seats and proper restraints; medical preventive measures; suicide awareness signs; and general child supervision and safety. The Committee identified an increase in child drowning fatalities, making drowning the leading category of preventable injury deaths reviewed this year. This trend highlights the need for enhanced community education and coordinated prevention initiatives focused on water safety. Based on this year's reviews, the Committee recommends expanding collaborative prevention efforts to address the increase in childhood drownings. The Committee will work with local partners, including public health agencies, schools, healthcare providers, parks and recreation departments, first responders, law enforcement, emergency medical services and community organizations to promote evidence-based drowning prevention strategies.
Thank you for this opportunity to present this information to you. If there are any additional questions about our reports and/or activities for Bibb County, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours very truly,
/s/ Pamela Faison
