ACTION MEMORANDUM
Enduring Solutions to Address PFAS Exposure in Drinking Water
near Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort
in Beaufort, South Carolina
The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps have initiated a response to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at or above the September 2024 Department of Defense (DoD) PFAS Interim Action Levels for Private Drinking Water Wells near Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort in Beaufort, South Carolina. Such actions to remove contamination or reduce risk are referred to as Time Critical Removal Actions under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
The action would provide an enduring solution for homes served by drinking water wells with PFAS at or above the September 2024 DoD PFAS Interim Action Levels for Private Drinking Water Wells. Potential enduring solutions include connection to a public water system or installation of a drinking water treatment system until public water connections become available. The response action has been initiated in accordance with Section 300.415(n)(2) of Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, as part of the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan.
