NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTE
This advertisement and a news release have been issued in compliance with North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C (a portion of the Clean Water Act of 1999). The information below was sent to news reporters on February 19, 2026. Charlotte Water crews responded to a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) near 2465 Mecklenburg Avenue on 2/18/2026. An estimated 16,380 gallons reached Briar Creek in the Catawba River Watershed. A pipe failure caused the overflow.
Charlotte Water maintains more than 4,638 miles of pipe. Charges from monthly water bills fund preventive maintenance, emergency response, and the safe daily delivery of more than 86 million gallons, where wastewater is treated to high water quality standards and released back into our waterways.
