NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTE
This advertisement and a news release have been issued in compliance with North Carolina General Statute 143-215.1C (a portion of the Clean Water Act of 1999). The information below was sent to news reporters on February 13, 2026. Charlotte Water crews responded to a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) near 6414 South Tryon Street on February 10, 2026. A pipe failure caused the overflow, and an estimated 571,164 gallons of untreated wastewater may have reached Sugar Creek in the Catawba River Watershed. Wastewater pipes that cross over creeks are inspected at least every six months. This overflow estimate reflects the volume that could have passed through the damaged pipe since the last inspection in August 2025.
Charlotte Water maintains more than 4,638 miles of pipe. Charges from monthly water bills fund preventive maintenance, emergency response, and the safe daily delivery of more than 86 million gallons, where wastewater is treated to high water quality standards and released back into our waterways. If you see or suspect a sewer spill, call 311 or 704-336-7600.
