WHATCOM COUNTY NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR A MAJOR VARIANCE Notice is hereby given that on 7/22/2026, John Oulver and Jamie Slagel with Olson Kundig, Inc applied for a major variance under case number VAR-MAJ2026-00006 proposing an approximately 88% to the County's front setback standard as well as a 50% variance to Whatcom County's minimum parking standards. If approved, this would reduce the front setback from a standard 20-foot setback from the front property line abutting the right-of-way to 2.33-feet from the front property line and reduce the number of required on-site parking spaces from two to one parking space, which will be provided by a new attached garage constructed to the southeast of the existing building footprint. The application was determined complete on 8/17/2026, indicating that all submittal requirements were met The project site is located at 559 Cedar Acres Road, within Section 25, Township 37 N, Range 03 E of W.M.; Assessor's Parcel No: 370325-094069. The application will be reviewed under the Official Whatcom County Zoning and Critical Areas Ordinances, as well as reviews by Whatcom County Planning and Development Services (Fire Marshal's Office, Natural Resources and Planning), Public Works Engineering and Health Department. The file and supporting documents may be reviewed at Whatcom County Planning and Development Services, 5280 Northwest Drive, Bellingham, WA 98226. Any person may submit written comments to Planning & Development Services at the above address or at PDS@co.whatcom.wa.us within 14 days of the publication of this notice. Written comments must be received by September 7, 2026. Any person has the right to receive notice of and participate in any hearings, request a copy of the decision once made, and to appeal a decision when allowed by law.
