Second Five-Year Review for the
Former Nike Site SL-10, Launch Area
Alhambra Township, Madison County, Illinois
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is initiating the second Five-Year Review (FYR) for the former Nike Site SL-10, Launch Area Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) Project, located at 10241 Fruit Rd, Alhambra, IL 62001. The FUDS project number for this site is E05IL008105. The purpose of this FYR is to evaluate whether the selected remedy for the former Nike SL-10 Launch Area remains protective of human health, safety and the environment. During this FYR, the USACE will review the site conditions and analyze the effectiveness of natural attenuation at minimizing contamination in groundwater that is associated with Department of Defense activities prior to 17 October 1986 at the former Nike SL-10 Launch Area. This FYR is being conducted in accordance with Section 121 of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
The former Nike SL-10 Launch Area is currently owned by Madison County and operated by the Madison County Highway Department.
The 2017 Decision Document for the former Nike SL-10 Launch Area concluded that the following remedial actions were required:
Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA). MNA includes groundwater monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of natural attention processes at reducing contaminants of concern (COC) concentrations in site groundwater within the overlying clay/silt (OCS) and intermediate silt sand (ISS) units.
Institutional Controls (ICs). ICs will restrict the current and future use of onsite groundwater in a manner to prevent exposure to groundwater by not allowing the installation or use of wells at the former Nike SL-10 Launch Area pursuant to the approved site cleanup.
Groundwater is sampled quarterly (four times annually) at the site.
Once this FYR is completed (anticipated August 2027), the results will be made available to the public via the Administrative Record at the following locations during normal business Hours: Highland Memorial Library, 1001 9th Street, Highland, IL, 62249 and USACE – Louisville District, 220 W Main St, Louisville, KY, 40202. The first FYR for the former Nike SL-10 Launch Area was completed in 2017, and the result of that review is also available at the above-stated locations. You may contact Charles Delano at (502) 315-6769 for hard copies of documents within the administrative record.
Questions or requests for information can be submitted to Valerie Doss, Project Manager, USACE – Louisville District at (502) 315-6108 or valerie.j.doss@usace.army.mil.
