CANYON FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT
The Canyon Forest Restoration Project Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) is available for 30-day public comment. This document can be accessed on Olympic National Forest website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/olympic/projects/62260. A copy of this environmental assessment is also available by request by contacting the project lead listed at the end of this notice. The proposed actions are intended to promote complex forest structure, accelerate the development of late-successional forest characteristics, and develop diverse wildlife habitats by thinning forest stands, while contributing to the economic viability of local communities through timber sales.
The proposed action is in the northeast part of the Olympic National Forest south of Sequim, WA in Clallam County. The proposed action would thin dense forest stands by removing some trees to decrease stand density and promote growth of remaining trees, while fostering the growth of native understory plant species. Other actions proposed include hand felling, planting or seeding herbaceous plants, creating snags and coarse woody debris, replacing under-sized culverts with aquatic organism passages (AOPs) to eliminate barriers to fish, developing rock pits for road material, and preparing roads to support logging equipment and hauling. Forest stands proposed for treatment are located near Forest Roads 2800, 2820, 2870, 2875, 2877, and 2878. Commercial thinning would occur on approximately 1,840 acres and other treatments would occur on approximately 320 acres. Harvesting activities include ground based, cable yarding or a combination of these methods.
