The Savannah River Site Environmental Bulletin September 16, 2025 Volume 37, Number 7 Savannah River Site Seeks RCRA Hazardous Waste Permit Renewal for Transuranic Waste (TRU) Pads (Current Permit Expires February 14, 2026) The National Nuclear Security Administration-Savannah River Field Office (NNSA-SRFO) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) - Savannah River Operations Office (DOE-SROO) requested a renewal to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permit for the Transuranic Waste (TRU) Pad Facility from the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES). The current permit expires on February 14, 2026. Per South Carolina regulations, a renewal request must be submitted 180-days prior to the expiration date of the effective permit. This request was met by the submittal of the Savannah River Site (SRS) 2023 RCRA Permit Renewal Application, Volume XIII, Revision 0, on August 7, 2025. Volume XIII is specific to the TRU Pad Facility, which consists of TRU Pads 3-6, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, and 26. The TRU Pad Facility is in the Solid Waste Management Facility within E-Area (near the center of the site). Hazardous, mixed, and radioactive wastes are stored on the TRU Pads until disposition at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) or other treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities. Some hazardous and mixed waste may be treated to facilitate storage efficiency and safety; to prepare the waste for disposal at WIPP; or to meet Land Disposal Restriction requirements. The TRU Pad Facility handles waste generated at on-site or off-site facilities. There were no substantive operational changes requested in this permit application renewal. More information, including the permit renewal application, is available for reviewing and copying at the DOE Public Reading Room located in the University of South Carolina-Aiken Library, or by contacting personnel identified in this notice. The Permittee's compliance history during the life of the permit is available from SCDES. Written comments may be sent to the SCDES contact information directly below. All comments will be considered in the final decision.
