View original fileClass 2 Permit Modification to the Hanford Dangerous Waste Permit
PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD: Sep. 2 – Nov 1, 2025
The U.S. Department of Energy is holding a 60-day public comment period and meeting
on a proposed Class 2 permit modification to the Hanford Dangerous Waste Permit. If
approved, the modification would allow the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant’s
Low-Activity Waste Facility to perform environmental performance demonstration tests
in a single and a dual melter configuration. When temporary authorization is approved,
BNI will continue work toward the Oct. 15 hot commissioning timeline recently agreed to
by the state.
A temporary authorization request is also submitted with this modification to allow
additional testing in a single melter configuration.
The Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant is in the 200 East Area of the Hanford
Site and will vitrify, or immobilize in glass, liquid tank waste from Hanford’s Tank Farms
in support of the Direct-Feed Low-Activity Waste Program.
The comment period will run from September 2 – November 1, 2025. A hybrid public
meeting will be held October 6, at 5:30 p.m. PT, in the Gallery Room of the Richland
Public Library, 955 Northgate Drive, Richland, WA 99352. You may participate virtually
