NOTICE OF DISCHARGED OF UNTREATED SEWAGE The Town of Hillsborough had multiple discharges of untreated wastewater from our collection system and pumping stations located at 355 and 318 Elizabeth Brady Road, near 1713 McRae Place, and in Gold Park and along Riverwalk greenway of an approximate combined amount of 7,060,500 gallons. The discharges began on July 7, 2025 due to an unprecedented amount of rainfall from Tropical Storm Chantal, which was only predicted to be up to 3 inches of rain but dropped 8 – 10 inches of rain very quickly and intensely. Some discharges ceased the same day, but multiple sewer outfall manholes adjacent to the Eno River overflowed until July 11, 2025 (approximately 120 hours). The untreated but very dilute wastewater entered into the Eno River, Cates Creek and Strouds Creek in the Neuse River Basin. The town set up bypass pumping at its sewer pumping stations that were flooded to prevent further discharges if not ceased naturally with the receding floodwaters and restoration of power. This notice was required by North Carolina General Statutes Article 21, Chapter 143.215C. For more information contact Marie Strandwitz, Utilities Director at 919-296-9631. IPL0258101 Jul 28 2025
