Fort Worth Seeking Public Input on PFAS Response Actions The City of Fort Worth is taking steps to reduce the level of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds in its drinking water. Sampling performed by the City indicates two PFAS compounds – perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) – are in Lake Worth source water at concentrations exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's maximum contaminant levels (MCL), which were adopted on April 26, 2024, and will become enforceable on April 26, 2029, unless extended by further rulemaking. These samples were collected near the City's raw water intakes, which supply water to the North Holly and South Holly water treatment plants. As a consequence, the City plans to develop a treatment system to reduce the PFAS concentrations in this source water. Fort Worth must ensure its drinking water complies with the new regulations before entering the City's drinking water distribution system. The treatment system is expected to be operational in advance of the ultimate compliance deadline for the MCLs. Fort Worth Water is evaluating the three technologies EPA recognizes as the best-available treatment options for removing PFAS from drinking water: granular activated carbon, ion exchange and reverse osmosis. The City contracted with a consulting engineering firm to assist in evaluating the effectiveness of the three technologies for the types of PFAS in Fort Worth's water supply, the costs associated with implementing each and other operational requirements. Public comments are being sought on the: 1. Preliminary Assessment Report/Site Inspection Report for Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), which was conducted to assess the occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Lake Worth surface water. 2. Focused Feasibility Study and Proposed Plan, which documents the City's assessment of PFAS response action alternatives. These documents are available on the Fort Worth Water website at https://www.fortworthtexas.gov/departments/water/drinking-water/pfas. The public has until July 25, 2025, to submit written comments. Written comments may be provided in the following ways: Online at www.fortworthtexas.gov/departments/water/drinking-water/pfas; By email to Mary.Gugliuzza@fortworthtexas.gov; or By U.S. Mail to the following address: Fort Worth Water ATTN: Mary Gugliuzza 100 Fort Worth Trail Fort Worth, TX 76102 All timely written comments will be considered and receive a written response. The public can meet members of Fort Worth Water's technical staff for the response action, ask questions, and provide oral or written comments on the Focused Feasibility Study and Proposed Plan and the Preliminary Assessment Report/Site Inspection Report. Summaries of any oral comments received will be documented. The meeting is: Tuesday, July 8, 2025 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Ella Mae Shamblee Library 1062 Evans Ave. Fort Worth, TX 76104 For information about the City's PFAS action response plan, contact: Mary Gugliuzza Fort Worth Water Media Relations & Communications Coordinator Phone: 817-392-8253 Email: Mary.Gugliuzza@fortworthtexas.gov IPL0248626 Jun 25 2025
